Strong Winds

An increase in frequency of extreme winds in winter is expected across most of the country, but especially in Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and Southland.

In contrast, a decrease in the frequency of extreme winds in summer is expected across most of New Zealand.

However, Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne and Taranaki are an exception, where an increase in the frequency of summer extreme winds may occur.

The magnitude of the change in frequency of extreme wind speed is not large – typically only a few percent by the end of the 21st century.
